The Robert James Building

The Robert James Building is a magnificent new venue for performances, conferences, weddings and other large scale events. It comprises a large performance hall, entrance foyer, gallery, green room and bar. Options include seating (see opposite), staging, lighting and sound. Curtains add further flexibility and, for events with many performers, the gymnasium can be used as an additional changing area.

Music

The Robert James Building is an ideal venue for all sorts of musical events: from classical and jazz to cabaret and children's concerts, from rock, rap and pop to folk and new acoustic. The building has been acoustically designed and acoustics can be adjusted using wall curtains. The highly versitile nature of the venue makes it a great place to come and enjoy your favourite style of music with a refeshing drink from the bar.

Dance

Comberton Leisure has become a favourite destination for dance performances and competitions. As well as the sound and lighting options described above, we offer two types of flooring suitable for all forms of dance from ballet to tap.

Drama

The facilities have been designed to accommodate drama performances. The excellent acoustics can be supplemented by wireless microphones and the advanced lighting deck is fully programmable.

Technical facilities

Sound facilities include a 12 channel mixer, permanently wired cabling from the mixer to the stage area, overhead and bass speaker units and a selection of dynamic and wireless microphones and stands.

Lighting is based around overhead gantries accessed by mobile ladder. Lighting control uses Strand equipment and includes full manual and programmable operation.

Technical facilities also include a permanent digital projector, electrically operated screen and connection for a laptop computer and/or video source (DVD, etc.).

For larger or more complex events we have skilled technicians that we can hire if needed.

Bar and catering

We are fully licensed and can offer a complete bar service. For large events we will set up several bar points, including in the upstairs gallery area.

We can also offer a comprehensive catering service, e.g. for cabarets. See the Functions page for more details.

Box office

Comberton Leisure can offer a comprehensive box office service. This includes promoting the event and selling tickets through our reception, where we take credit cards.

Weddings

Comberton Leisure is already a great hit for weddings and receptions. We recognise the importance of the day and make sure everything is planned from beginning to end - timing, layout, catering, music, flowers, photography, etc.

Our set price wedding packages can include all these and more, and further take the stress out of a day that all the family and friends should enjoy.

Named after a governor who served Comberton Village College for 38 years, The Robert James Building features electrically retractable tiered seating, a flexible de-mountable stage, excellent theatre lighting and sound re-enforcement.

With the seating installed the maximum capacity for a performance is 450, the standing capacity (without any seating) is 650.
